Kids BJJ Questions from Parents

What age can my child start BJJ?

Children can start from age 4 in our Tots class. Kids 1 is for ages 6 to 8 and Kids 2 for ages 9 to 13.

Does my child need any experience or fitness?

No. Most children start with no experience. Coaches adapt every class to the age and level of the group.

What should my child wear to the free trial?

Comfortable sports clothing without zips or pockets, such as a T-shirt or rash guard and leggings or shorts. No jewellery. We’ll lend your child a gi for their first session. Bring a water bottle and flip-flops or sliders for walking off the mat.

Do I need to book kids classes?

Yes. Kids need to be registered and booked into their classes through the MAAT app. When you arrive at the academy, your child checks in on the iPad at reception.

Can parents watch?

Yes. Parents are very welcome to stay and watch from the seating area. We ask that parents leave the coaching to our team during class.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe for children?

BJJ has no striking. Children learn controlled techniques, how to fall safely, and how to look after their training partners, all under the watchful eyes of our coaches.
